Our Approach

At Global Surgery Umbrella (GSU), our work is guided by three interconnected pillars:

We support individuals and organizations in their role as agents for change that contribute to institutional strengthening to promote fair and inclusive access to anaesthesia, nursing, and surgical care globally.

We contribute to scientific advancements that support policy changes and promote global access to safe, timely, and affordable anaesthesia, nursing, and surgical care.

We facilitate the provision of resources and services that strengthen healthcare systems and improve access to high-quality and sustainable anaesthesia, nursing, and surgical care for all.

How We Work

We operate like a marketplace whereby we bring together members from diverse backgrounds, including medical specialists, sociologists, business leaders, human rights advocates as well as medical experts in surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pain management, and nursing.

Local partners play a vital role by identifying and raising issues related to anaesthesia, nursing, and surgical care needs. As a network, we use our collective resources to deliver solutions that are tailored to local contexts.

GSU serves a multifaceted role:

  • We act as an intermediary, connecting those who face challenges (“Problem Holders”) with members who can offer solutions (“Solution Providers”).

  • We enable our members to actively contribute to advocacy, academics and actions, depending on the needs and opportunities in each setting.

Our Guiding Principles

  • Local problems owners, such as anesthesiologists, nurses, and surgeons, who drive the initiative and guide our actions.

  • We organize a community response so that the problems and the solutions are sustained within the local contexts.

  • We prioritize building long-term, ethical, sustainable, and resilient relationships that go beyond any individual effort.
